Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 Aspherical MEGA O.I.S. -- A Fantabulous Lens

Panasonic is a Japanese multinational corporation and it produces electronic products such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, DVD recorders and players, batteries, digital cameras and a lot more. Panasonic unveiled its new standard zoom lens called Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 Aspherical MEGA O.I.S. lens.

Lumix G Vario has an interchangeable lens designed for the cameras compatible with micro four thirds system standard. It is suitable for a wide range of photography from portrait to landscape. The lens gets constructed in a combination of 12 elements in nine groups with one aspherical lens. The zoom range of this lens is 14mm to 45mm. The filter size is 52mm (2.05 inches). The maximum diameter of the lens is 60mm (2.36 inches). The overall length of this lens is about 60mm from the tip of the lens to the base side of the lens mount.

The aspherical lens element improves optical performance by minimizing the distortions even at the 28mm wide end. The lens comprises MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which makes it easy to shoot clear shots even at low light conditions by controlling the blur caused by a handshake. The diagonal angle of view will be 75° (W) to 27° (T). Lumix G Vario has a reliable metal mount. It uses multi coated lens elements which reduce ghosts and flare and delivers a high optical performance.

When the lens gets mounted on Lumix G Micro System DMC-G1 camera, we can use contrast AF system which offers a wide variety of convenient functions. The minimum focus distance of Lumix G Vario is 30cm even at full zoom. The lens provides photographic magnification of 0.34x. It gives maximum magnification at minimum focus distance also. The minimum aperture is F22. Lumix G Vario produces some Chromatic Aberration, but it is negligible. In the mid range of 18 to 40mm, CA is slightly visible. The wide angle lenses show a high degree of CA with this lens.

The lens includes seven aperture blades in a rounded shape which gives attractive smoothness in out of focus areas while shooting at large aperture. The accessories of this lens includes lens cap, lens hood, lens rear cap and lens storage bag. The lens hood is petal shaped and it gets attached with bayonet style mount. The lens weighs 195g (6.88 ounces). This lens has a quick and sharp focus capacity. Lumix G Vario is a lightweight lens and ultra compact in size. It is a nice little lens and it provides solid performance to the users.
