Pancake Type Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm F1.7 Aspherical lens

Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm F1.7 Aspherical lens is a compact, pancake type, light weight lens that employs micro 4/3 mount for cameras like Olympus pen system and Panasonic Lumix G. It has focal length of 20mm i.e. 40mm equivalent of 35mm film camera with faster maximum aperture of F1.7 and minimum aperture of F16. This type of aperture capabilities results into excellent corner to corner resolution and quality brightness outputs.

Panasonic LUMIX has 7 lens elements in 5 groups that include two aspherical elements. These aspherical elements are good enough to reduce chromatic aberration and distortion. All the lens elements are coated with multi layers to reduce flare and ghosting. Lens uses aperture diaphragm of 7 rounded blades that help in producing appealing and smooth output in out of focus conditions at high aperture. Lens has quite impressive soft focus that makes it suitable for shooting indoor scenes in low light conditions, scenes like sunset and other creative photography.

This lens from Panasonic uses Auto Focus motor of DC micro type and employs Unit focus AF method. Its AF motor is driven by turning the “by wire” operated focus ring. AF system of lens has both good speed as well as sufficient accuracy. Lens, when coupled with LUMIX G camera, can initiate advanced AF contrast functions such as “Face recognition”. It is very convenient to shoot with this lens that produces good outputs especially in street shooting.

Ultra thin Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm measures 25.5mm in length, 63mm in diameter with weight of just 100g. Lens has strong built with high quality plastic and metal mount exteriors. Lens has diagonal angle of viewing of 57 degrees, accepts filter size of 46mm and has 0.13x of maximum magnification but there is no image stabilization in it. Lens is supplied with lens case and both front and rear caps.

Panasonic LUMIX supports closest focus distance of 0.2 meters. At this close distance, its inner tube extends a bit but results are very sharp, though contrast may become bit soft. Lens does not have low quality blur in out of focus conditions but may show little outlining. Barrel distortion is almost zero but raw distortions are not that good. Vignetting quality of lens is also not impressive and is just average. Overall, at available price of about $400, this Panasonic lens is a very small, compact lens with outstanding AF performance and excellent resolution that is emphasized on the centre portion of images.
