Telephoto Zoom Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 45-200mm F4.0-5.6 MEGA O.I.S.

Panasonic Lumix G Vario 45-200mm F4.0-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. is an interchangeable lens with focal length resolution of 45 to 200mm i.e. 35mm film equivalent of 90-400mm and aperture range from F4.0 Wide to F5.6 Tele. It is a 4 by 3 system, telephoto zoom lens that is compatible with cameras like DMC-G1. Within the whole zoom range, lens produces nice picture quality with minimum chromatic aberration and can comfortably shoot scenes like lighthouse from a distance of six to seven miles.

Lumix G Vario 45-200mm uses mega Optical Image Stabilization, an advanced technology for handshake correction that helps in shooting scenes with sufficient clarity in low light conditions without requiring any tripod. This technology results into clear pictures without any blur damages. It uses sixteen lens elements in thirteen groups that include three ED glass elements. The employment of ED elements results into high color output with high contrast quality. Lens elements are coated suitably with multi layers so as to reduce flare and ghost problems.

This lens has seven circular aperture diaphragm blades that produce high performance optical outputs in out of focus situation. Lens supports minimum aperture of F22, close focus distance of 1m at all zoom settings and maximum magnification of 0.19x i.e. equivalent to 0.38x in 35mm terms. In combination with DMC-G1 camera, one can use various functions based on contrast Auto Focus system. Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO also supports continuous AF/AE function, be it movies shooting or images.

LUMIX G VARIO 45-200m accepts filter of size 2.05 inches and supports diagonal angle of viewing up to 27 degrees. It has a compact body with strong metal mount, is 380g in weight with maximum diameter of 70mm and length of 3.93 inches. Lens is supplied with all the standard accessories such as lens front and rear caps, lens storage case and lens hood.

Panasonic has also recently released version 1.1 firmware for this lens that is supposed to add more fun to lens operation in terms of enhancing auto focus response in AFC mode and stability of Optical Image Stabilization. The version is supposed to eventually reduce noise in aperture control operation while shooting movies. Lens is bit heavier and its body remains close to hand grip that can be problem for some people but overall, at available price of about $250, it has excellent quality at maximum zoom and performs nicely in all types of shooting conditions.
