Sigma 70-300mm APO DG MACRO -- A Proficient SLR Lens

Sigma Corporation, a Japan based company best known for the production of cameras, lenses, flashes and other photographic accessories. The lenses being produced by Sigma are compatible with all cameras manufactured by other companies too. Sigma 70-300mm DG MACRO is one such product from Sigma Corporation.

Sigma 70-300mm comes with a dimension of 76.6 mm x 122 mm (D x L). This lens has been constructed with a nice combination of 14 elements in ten groups. The aperture of this sigma lens ranges from f/4 to f/5.6. This lens provides an angle of view from 34.3 degree to 8.2 degree. The filter size of this lens is about 58mm. The focusing type of this lens features two types of focusing. They are rotating focus and extending focus. The closest focus obtained through this lens will be 1.5m. The maximum magnification capacity of this lens is 0.5x.

Sigma 70-300mm features an APO sister lens. This sister lens accommodates the AF/MF switch, which is on the left of the barrel. To the third of this is occupied by a zoom ring, which is marked at 70, 100, 135, 200 and 300mm. The next part of the barrel holds a basic depth-of-field scale. On the left, it includes a switch which enables ߵMacro' photography. The final part of the barrel contains a focus ring. The manual focus is nicely torqued. When it gets switched to autofocus, it cannot be over-ridden and it turns stiff. In normal mode, the focusing of this lens can be extended to a maximum of 17mm. In macro mode, the focal length varies from 200 mm to 300 mm.

This lens also includes a single SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element in its construction which helps in overcoming chromatic aberration by controlling and managing distortion of image. The level of distortions is low across the range. It has a negligible barrel distortion at 70mm. It also contains some pincushion distortions at 200mm and 300 mm. Macro modes are engaged by a sliding switch, when the lens gets extended above 200mm. The macro mode allows photography in a wide range to a ratio of 1:2. In macro mode, the closest focus range will be 0.95m. This lens has been upgraded to DG (Digitally Optimized) status seems to close the gap slightly on its more expensive sister.

The lens features a nice mount which is suitable for all cameras. It supports Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Minolta and Pentax. This sigma lens weighs 0.545kg. It is very light to carry. This lens has a brilliant capacity of focusing any kind of objects within a meter. It gives an excellent optical performance and makes it worth for its buyers. The photographers who love to shoot subjects much closer will love this handy lens.
