inexpensive tripod suggestion

I finally received the Digital Rebel XT yesterday. I am looking for a tripod that is sturdy , lightweight, portable, can extend to a reasonable height, has a quick release plate, and in the neighborhood of $30. If that's not possible, what is the range I should expect?

$30 tripods are generally not very good. They all wobble. But being warned . . . they can still make a difference, because it's better than having no tripod. The only good thing about a $30 tripod is that it is generally very light.

Ambico and Velbon comes to mind.

Go to Target or Wal-mart. Play around with some of the tripods they have there. You can see how they wobble and you can find one that is the lightest.

You are right about the $30 tripods being somewhat flimsy. I looked at a few at Fry's and they were all about the same in that price range. They are also short / low. I want something that can extend to 48 inches or more to take pictures of people standing up.

I have to work on my hand shaking while taking the picture. It just doesn't want to stay steady.
