Photography is many different things to many people. It is an art, a science, a passion or a means of expressing one's thoughts and feelings for the subject. Since the Digital era has hit, photography has changed the way people take pictures and has turned ametrues into wannabe professionals by making it so easy to just point and click. The point of photography whether you use a digital camera or a DSLR or an old, tried and true 35mm film camera, is to capture people, events, objects, scenery, action, still life, animals, etc. in an image that will last forever.
Photography is so much more than just pointing at a subject and clicking the shutter. Many things have to be taken under consideration such as what kind of lens to use, what time of day is best for lighting, how to compose or set up the scene, what the lens aperture should be, and what the shutter speed should be set on. This is true even when using a digital camera or a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) because you can set a digital camera on manual and use it just like a 35mm film camera.
Depending on how involved you want to get into photography, it can be very complex and the best favor you can do for yourself is to take some courses, just to learn the basics and you will be surprised how much better your photos will turn out. It is not necessary to actually get in your car and travel to school, you can find many good courses online such as the New York Institute of Photography, which is one of the best, the New England School of Photography, Hallmark Institute of Photography and the New York Film Academy just to name a few and all of these offer both classroom courses as well as online.
Photography has come such a long way from developing film in a darkroom and hoping the photos turn out to today with digital cameras where all you have to do is upload the images to your computer and use software such as Photoshop to fix whatever may have gone wrong. But, unless you know at least the basics, even Photoshop will not fix some shots. Even if all you do is read the owners manual from cover to cover and study every page, that is better than nothing. If you cannot take a class, at least take your owners manual with you everywhere you take your camera, just in case you are in a situation and do not know what to do.
Most photographers, whether professional or not, have their own favorite camera. This writer's camera of choice is the Canon in both 35mm film as well as DSLR; to me, Canon just cannot be beat. There are, of course, many good camera's on the market that take beautiful photos like the Nikon, the Sony, the Yashica, which is a very old TLR (Twin Lens Reflex and also one of my favorites). This is just a few of the camera's on the market today.
