Cheapest camera that can be remoted

I am looking to build a non-destructive book scanner, and for the prototype I need the absolutly cheapest cameras that can be reasonably remoted (operation and picture download) from a PC. If they can be operated from Linux it would be a big plus, but a windows SDK is ok for now.

Which camera would you pick for this project? I am looking at Olympus 4040s, which are quite cheap now secondhand, but I don't even know whether they can be remoted.

The Canon G6 or G7 is a bit expensive but will offer shooting and saving from the SDK.

The Olympus FE-130 can be controlled via SDK and is at eBay around 90€.
How did you solve it? I'm facing the same challenge.
