Digital cam turned into an HD cam?

Got a question: would it be possible to take 2 digital cameras that have 12 fps record mode, and stagger them so you'd get a full 24fps movie mode? Maybe have some sort of software controller that interfaces with said cameras to stagger the fps? Just an idea, but I wonder how plausible this would be. Thanks!

Buck, that's actually not such a bad idea. And maybe some the software development kits supports the triggering of video caption start and stop. Then you just have to write a program to start one camera before the other (by 1 frame). Currently, Canon, Kodak, Nikon, and Olympus all have digital camera SDK's that may support this effort.

Though I think you may find some other technical difficulties hard to overcome.

The first technical difficulty that I can think of is how do you get both cameras to frame the same subject? It would be very difficult to align them properly. And any slight shift in one camera will totally screw up your video.

A child of this difficulty is that assuming you can get both cameras aligned perfectly all the time, you would still have a perspective problem. Both cameras will see the scene slightly differently, even though they have framed the same subject. This difficulty is actually how a stereo camera works, and what gives our eyes depth perception. Each of our two eyes sees the scene from a slightly different perspective, allowing our brain to compute depth for each object in the scene.

Another technical difficulty I see with this concept is that most digital cameras capture video in a compressed format, such as MPEG. Each frame may not contain the entire scene, but the changes from previous scene. That means, it may not be as simple as interleaving every other frames. I'm not sure how much of a difficulty this is. Perhaps others can answer this question for you.
