I have been trying to get some data out of my Canon PowerShot S3 IS for some time now but I am stumped. When I go into Manual Mode and press the MF button on my camera, the display shows the MF Indicator, where the object's in its field of view is displayed. I tried to compute this myself using the conjugate lens equation but I can only seem to get the focal length and not the lens-to-CCD distance using the SDK. I also tried using the libptp open-source project under Linux. In that, there is a "Focus Distance" property but I cannot get my camera to return a value for it. Has anyone ever tried to do this? The number seems to be pretty reliable and I think it would work nicely for my purpose.
Thank you.
