i know it probably sounds really stupid but is a sd card different to a sdhc one- because on my camera it keeps saying the card is locked error- is that because its the wrong card?

Yes, they are different. SD stands for "Secure Digital", while SDHC stands for "Secure Digital High Capacity". Cards that are bigger than 2 GB are SDHC cards. Your device must be compatible with SDHC to use the bigger capacity cards.
