problem formatting Seagate 4GB Microdrive in Nikon D70

I bought a Seagate 4GB compact flash card, for my D70 but when I insert it in the camera it says it is not formated. I tried formating with the menu but no luck. Any ideas?

Where did you get the 4 GB Microdrive? Did you buy it in a retail package? Was it made for digital cameras?

There was a time where people were taking 4 GB Microdrives out of MP3 players to use in digital camera. They worked. However, manufacturers soon made Microdrives that would only work in MP3 players. Those drives do not work in digital cameras.

See this thread for more reference:

Don't know where you got your drive, but answering my questions above will help fill in some details.

Sound like it's defective, Jim. If it's made for digital cameras, then it should be as easy as inserting into your digital camera and formatting it . . .

D70 does not work with 4GB microdrive. See info from Nikon site. A firmware upgrade is necessary 3.1 or 3.2. This info can be found in Seagate site but firmware is supplied from Nikon site.
No problem with D70s, 4GB uses 32bit formatting. Nikon approves Hitachi microdrive at 2GB and 4GB. Stick to Ultra II and less chance of losing data. These drive are delicate and has a breathing hole for air to balance the small disc spinning.
