Inside the miniSD-to-SD Adapter and the microSD-to-SD Adapter

> It turned out that the two shorter middle pins on the miniSD cards aren't used. Now I wonder what they are for.

Apparently they are reserved for future use and not connected. See:

Flash card adds functionality to mobile phones

I would be interested to see the pictures of the microSD adaptor internals if you have some.

Ian, I took some a few weeks ago . . . just been too busy with chores. Let me find some time to post them this week.

I can't seem to find the photos I shot before. Maybe I just thought I shot them. Anyway, I took pictures today and have posted them in the article.

Cool.

I've found the transflash pinout on SanDisk's web site here:

SanDisk TransFlash Memory Module

Like you said, there is only one ground pin.

Can you tell what the odd looking pair of contacts going up the side of the card are? They look a bit like switch contacts. Are they connected to anything or are they just there to hold the card in place?

At first I thought they were a pair of contact switch as well. But after close examination, I see that they are connected to each other before going under the black plastic. I believe they are there to provide a soft latch for the microSD (TransFlash) card.

Wonder if this helps. Perhaps you could use a multimeter or any device that allows you to test the "continuity" of circuits. You could then use this to trace the pins of the microSD - SD adapter.

My MicroSD to SD adaptor has a write protect switch on the side that the MicroSD card doesn't have, so could one of the contacts just be a write protect?

Have you managed to find a micro-sd to mini-sd adaptor? I would also really like one of these as I have a number of micro-sd cards which would be useful to use in my PDA which takes a mini-sd card. Thank you.

Ohm meter. you can see which pins are connected by checking the connections. if you don't have that, you can rig up an led and a battery to see the connections.

Sure, Dradsa, the adapters are just pass-through connectors. Your idea should work just fine.

I recently started work on a SD to TF adapter since my TF(microsd) recently bit the dust. So I stumbled upon your site and it helped me a bit. Thought you might want this. It is a detailed picture of the inside of that micro SD to SD adapter.

great work, this is very helpful to me. i need a computer chip for a short film and was trying to figure out how to take apart an SD card w/out destroying it. I didn't realize you could unclip the plastic, awesome.

I've carelessly open my miniSD adapter and I lost something so that the remaining is just 3 part as you can see in this photo.
My PC read it as read-only.
Some picture on internet could not help me to know what to do to make it write-enable again..
Can U help me?

You lost the write protect tab. You can use a piece of tape in its place. See the "memory card locked" thread.
