Interesting idea, Andy. I'll take a look to see if it could be taken apart. What do you want to do with it?

Thanks for the speedy reply. Here's my thought (lengthly kind of)

I was thinking of using the s-hd-100 as a USB OTG device to store pics from my Olympus e-300 through direct USB hook-up.

(direct USB hook up : I made a sex change of male USB plug into female USB plug so the USBs (back of s-hd-100 and camera) can connect together. Test it to see if camera will see s-hd-100 as computer so it will download pics into it, but not working. So I'm thinking that perhaps the USB from the back of s-hd-100 is used as slave when connected to computer (and in this case, camera), so no go to be used as USB OTG device here.

Since pa-7 is used between the camera (other than IR series cam) to connect the s-hd-100, so I'm thinking of going through the dock&done port will do. But I'm not sure if the pa-7 (most likely with chips) to control the download, and especially the "copy" button. What is it doing here (technically and electronically) ??

The pinout on the dock&done port is unknown. So it will be great if you can test it out which goto the usb 4 pins(5 wires anyway), and what happen when "copy" button is pressed (electronic signal etc).

I'm sure the direct hook-up (dock&done port to the camera by-passing the pa-7) will not be successful (if pa-7 has chips inside), but there is no harm to try.

And if the schematics of pa-7 is not too complicated, perhaps a diy project is not so far away.

so hacking the pa-7 is what I'm saying here

sorry for the mubble jumble

Hi Andy. That sounds like a neat idea. I suspect that the USB connection uses the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP).

I have posted photos to the content of the PA7 adapter in this article: Inside Olympus PA7 USB Adapter

Chieh,

The PATA 2.5" drive on my 5-year old Toshiba laptop died and rather than buying a new replacement drive, I was wondering if pulling the 2.5" drive out of the S-HD-100 and use it as a replacement would work since I no longer use it for data storage (using high capacity Passports now). But before I try it, I'd like to know if you've ever cracked the case of the S-HD-100 and if you did, is the drive a standard PATA drive or a SATA? If it's a SATA, then case closed as it wouldn't work anyway. Any instructions/pix on how to crack the case open would be greatly appreciated (don't want to destroy the unit trying to get at the drive). I couldn't find any info as to the type of drive this unit has but I suspect it's probably PATA due to the age but I'd like to be sure. Hope it's a standard PATA interface.

Thanks,
David

It's PATA. I meant to work on a document that outlines how to take it apart and replace the hard drives. That document is empty and is here: Upgrading the Olympus S-HD-100 with a Bigger Hard Drive. I'll try to finish it up one of these day. But the gist is that there are two screws under two of the rubber feets of the enclosure.

Chieh,

Thanks. I'll try it out today. I was wondering how to crack it open because I took off one of the feet and there was no screw. Guess I tried the wrong one.

I have one of these, but the USB port is broken. Is there any other way to retrieve my file?

Sandra,

You'll have to take apart the case and pull the hard drive out. It's a notebook-sized hard drive with a IDE connector. Then you can buy a USB hard drive enclosure and put the hard drive into it. Once it's in the enclosure, you can plug it into your computer to read the files.

Title: Inside Olympus PA7 USB Adapter

Excerpt: Thank you so much for taking the inside pictures of the pa-7. It really help to figure out what is the secret inside. It will cost me $50 ($25 +$25 shipping to Canada) to get the pa-7 and my wife denied my request already :-( There are a few USG OTG bridges (similar to pa-7 but not limited to . . .
