building my own CCD interface

yo I was just reading about a device called the reel-stream andromeda, which is a gadget for capturingun compressed dv video directly from the CCD block of a panasonic DVX camcorder on to a hard drive. on their website they say this device could theoretically work on any mini DV camcorder but that the process of wireing it up would be different on almost every model. what I want to know is just how difficult and or expensive it would be to build my own version of somthing like this? and how much would it it would improve the imagery of cheaper camcorders?
