The Blue Pixel Guide to Travel Photography: Perfect Photos Every Time

When I received the Blue Pixel Guide to Travel Photography, I had high expectations. After all, the sub-title of this book is "Perfect Photos Every Time". I expected this book to talk about composition, color, and other typical photography topoics that will help you obtain the "perfect photo".

I was wrong. Out of a seven-chapter book, this book covered composition in about thirteen pages (the book has 203 pages total). The rest of the book cover everything from picking the right photography gears for travel, packing your photography gears, planning your trip, deciding what photographs to shoot, shooting picture in challenging weather, managing your photographs, and sharing your photographs with the world. These are all topics that I wouldn't expect from a book on taking perfect travel photos.

However, this is a welcome change, because I see few field books on travel photography. Most of them are simply targeted toward the typical tourist, who visits a city and have the conveniences of transportation and tourist attractions. The Blue Pixel Guide to Travel Photography is written by the staffs of Blue Pixel (see Related Links below), an organization that is focused on teaching photography from an unbiased, real-world perspective.

A total of six professional photographers contributed their practical experience in the book. And it shows in the content of the book, because whenever I read a practical passage, I remember the amount of effort and the number of mistakes I've made to learn that lesson. For example, when the book talked about the three different types of travel photographers--minimalist, specialist, and the pessimist--and there is no "right" type, it is obvious that I fall into the specialist category. I've become a specialist only after years of trial-and-error, planning, and traveling. It's amazing that they were able to put their travel photography know-how into one thin guide.

The Blue Pixel Guide to Travel Photography comes in a green soft cover format. It contains only 224 pages. The book is printed on semi-gloss (see picture below), in color, and on decent stock papers. Although the book is printed on fairly heavy paper, the overall book remains thin and easy to carry around as a guide. Its thinness is a great trait for carrying in the pocket of your travel luggage.

Overall, the book is written at beginning to intermediate level. If you are new to photography or an amateur, you will pick up a lot of knowledge very quickly through this book. If you are a professional or have years of experience, this book will have little to offer you.
