Samsung SCH-U740

Review of Samsung SCH-U740(Verizon Alias) Camera Phone

The Samsung sch-u740, also known as the Samsung alias is a Verizon phone that has been predominately featured on many television ads in the past few months. It has a full qwerty keyboard, a custom “desk” interface, Bluetooth, EV-DO wireless and a 1.3Megapixel camera. There are 2 screens on the phone, on the inside there is a 176x220pixel display while on the outside there is a 96x96 color display. Overall the build quality of the phone is excellent, except at the hinge where it feels somewhat weak because it is a dual flip phone. The buttons on the phone are somewhat small, and can be hard to use for people with larger fingers, which can cause some discomfort when trying to dial a phone number or send a text message. The main feature on this phone is that it is a dual flip, meaning that you can flip it open horizontally or vertically. When opened vertically it is to be used mainly for calling, and all the media features such as music can only be accessed when opened horizontally. The keys for dialing share the same physical keys as the keyboard for horizontal usage, which means trying to text while the phone is opened vertically is challenging because of the small size. Battery life on this phone from my personal experience has been lacking, only around 3 days standby and 2-3 hours talk time before the battery is exhausted. The camera in the phone is also lacking, as it is just a low end cheap camera for a phone. The camera does not focus well, and text is unreadable. There are no options on this phone to zoom in on images either, so you have to either email the pictures to your computer or use a memory card reader in order to view anything such as text in images. The inbox of the phone holds 61 messages while the outbox is a rolling 32, meaning that when you send 32 it will delete the first message you send in order to let you send the next message. The phone comes preloaded with basic tools such as a calculator, alarm clock, stopwatch and notepad, and also has voice commands and voice dialing features. The voice texting feature I have found to be lacking for anything other than simple words such as “Hi” or “Whats Up”, and will often freeze up trying to interpret what has been said. Overall the sch-u740 is a great phone for the price if you can live with its quirks, as it is almost free now, and many times Verizon will run specials so that the phone is free with a 2 year contract.
