Went to my son and daughter's Christmas recital last night. I brought my Canon EOS Rebel T3i and my Sigma 70-200mm EX HSM lens to take videos of their piano recital. But more importantly, I brought the Adorama Podomatic monopod to stabilize the video. I lime this monoopd, because it is light and can go anywhere. It is especially useful for travelling, because you don't know what you'd get into.
Last year, I had used the same equipment to film their recital. The result was better. There was less wavering on my part, because I had the monopod on the floor. This year, I could not extend it precisely to the length I wanted. But completely collapsed, it was just the right length when braced on my upper leg. But reviewing the video at home, I found the video was not only wavering, but it was bouncing slightly to the beat of my heart.
Lesson learned is that the human body is not a good solid foundation for stabilizing a video. Stabilizing a photo shoot is not so bad. A even better lesson learned is that a Christmas recital is not an unexpected travel location. Therefore, I should hauled my Bogen-Manfrotto tripod to the scene.
