Digital Rebel XT vs. Modified Digital Rebel vs. Digital Rebel

I understand that from your article that you can't download the 3200 speed on a Digital Rebel XT. I am very new to this. What would your suggestion be in taking pictures for a gymnastics event? What speed? and what settings? I also have a basic 75-300is lens. Thank You

The rule of thumb is to use shutter speed that is 1 over the focal length of your lens. So at 300mm, you'll want to use a shutter speed of 1/300.

The gymnastics event is indoor, right? For indoor sporting events, you'll need as high ISO speed as you can get to freeze action. You'll also want to use your lens with the widest open aperture (smaller f-number bigger aperture).

So for your Canon EF 75-300 USM IS lens, your biggest aperture is between f/4 and f/5.6. On your Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, you'll want to use the highest ISO speed, which is 1600.

ThankYou for responding, I will use try your suggestion. These meets are indoors. Do you recommend a different lens than the one I have? This lens is new and can be returned. Will ISO 1600 be enough? Do you think in the future we would be able to add the 3200 speed to the RT? I'm just wondering if I purchased the wrong camera for the kind of pictures I would like to take? I will take any suggestions you have I would like them to be clear. Thanks

It really depends on how much lighting is available at the meets. If they use huge stadium flood lights, then you are probably ok. But they only use office fluorescent lamps, then you probably need a more professional f/2.8 lens. You'll have to take your camera and your lens to the meet and test them out. I would test them out as early as possible.

It's hard to say whether anyone has the will to hack the XT firmware. You shouldn't count on it. If someone does, it'd be a bonus.

Hi. Read your review of the Rebel XT. Think the ISO hack can be applied to it?

Thanks!

Probably not. I suspect that the Digital Rebel XT firmware is different from the Digital Rebel firmware, considering that the XT have many new features.

But I hope someone will come out with a firmware hack for the XT.

From what I understand, Canon is going to release an updated firmware to enable 3200 ISO on the Rebel XT some time around September 2005. All we have to do is wait... As to hacking it, the original Rebel was a modified 10D. Many of the core features were disabled to account for the higher price of the 10D at the time. Some brilliant individual realized this and compared the 10D and Rebel firmwares and began to unlock it's secrets. Many thanks to them, by the way... :) Canon learned from this and the XT is not a modified 20D firmware, at least not from what I have been able to learn from the reps. On the upside they didn't try any of their prior shenanigans of locking out functions. So any firmware updates will have to come from Canon. At least for now, though I'm sure that certain brilliant individuals are working diligently to prove me wrong. And I look forward to it!

Darren: Whereabouts did you hear that Canon will enable 3200ISO in September? It is something which would be quite helpful to me, if they did! Cheers,

Sunil
