Universal remote with Canon cameras

Do you remember if you used code 0132 or 1132 for your remote? I am trying like mad to make Cinema6 or Recoton Remote6 to work but no luck. Any ideas? Where should the remote point to and how should be IX be set up ? What mode etc. Thanks! Bart

The code that I was talking about only applies to the Magnavox REM100 Universal Remote. You will have to find the equivalent code for your specific remote. Look for codes for MGA branded VCR's in the instruction manual of your remote control.

hi Chieh.
i just visited your camera hacking site and i thought i'd ask you about something i have been able to get very little information on.

(by the way, cool site)

i'm geting my 1st eos body and lens soon (hopefully). i'd like to "hack" together a remote shutter release by using my HP48 programmable calculator's infrared capabilities to send the neccesary IR sequence to the IR sensor on an eos body (eos30/elan7e) to trigger the shutter.

i've searched with various search engines, in netnews archives and in the photo.net forums but i could not find anything useful.

do you have any tips or info?

thanks.

Just went to Target for the $8 GE universal remote (the one with no numbers--it's smaller!). The book listed two codes for MGA (a brand name used by Mitsubishi mostly for the benefit of people who remember Mitsubishi fighter planes from the 40s) VCRs; the one that worked was "290".

Thanks for saving me $20!!!

Hi,

I am trying to remote control my Canon EOS Elan 7e with a remote control software on Sony Clie PDA.

Software is Clie RMC and I need the correct device ID and command ID for the shutter button on the RC-1 controller.

Does anyone have this information ?
If not, do you know the remote control protocol that Canon Camera's use ?
(RC5, NEC, RC6, Sony12, Sony15)

Thanks...

My Ipaq 2210 came with a cool piece of software called "Nevo" which emulates hundreds of IR devices. I can configure it to control just about anything in my house using my Ipaq. Still trying to find the right combination to trigger the shutter on my Digital Rebel. I tried the MGA VCR settings but no luck. Has anyone had success with the Digital Rebel?

Nick

I've tried all of the suggested models in my Nevo software, but nothing will control the DRebel.

Chuck
Tue May 11 08:24:51 PDT 2004

One more note on Nevo. It has a learn feature so if a friend has an orginal Canon remote, Nevo can learn the signal. Sadly, I have no friends - with this remote :)

For the Canon 300D remote hack....use a One For All remote from Wal-mart ($6) .... set TV to Telefunken (code 702) ... mute button will now give shutter delay shutter release and play button will give immediate shutter release.... hold button down on both for a second or two....

Greg Hampton
Wed, 12 May 2004 02:20:19 -0400

OK, Using the info provided by Greg, I contacted NEVO support and they gave the following information which emulates the device specified in Greg's note.
-----------------------------
The 0702 code is not in the Nevo software.
In order to get these codes, you will need to register on our free
www.mynevo.com website. Once there, you will go to the
Download Center and choose the "TV" device type, and the
"Telefunken" brand name and download the information .

After you have transferred the information to your iPAQ using the
"Active Sync" program, you will:

1. Open Nevo
2. Choose "Add a Device" on the wheel
3. Choose "TV" in the drop-down menu
4. Choose "Select Brand Downloaded from MyNevo.com"
5. Choose your brand,(Telefunken), from the drop-down menu
6. Choose the #26 code in the list. This is the 0702 TV code.
7. Finish the "wizard" and you will see your device on the wheel.

I cannot vouch for the information you received abut the code and the
Cannon, but the code should be in there now so you can try it

NEVO SUPPORT
-------------------------
I tried this but still no luck. I'll continue to experiment...

Greg,
I picked up the One for All remote (model URC-3021B00) for $6 Wal-Mart. I set the TV code to "0702" but still no luck with my Canon 300D . What am I missing?

Nick
Fri May 14 17:23:44 PDT 2004

I was trying all of the codes in Nevo for the Telefunkin, somewhere around 10 or 11, the camera focused and fired. I tried all of the buttons several times, but it never happened again. Very curious.

Chuck
Sat May 15 09:49:31 PDT 2004

After working with Nevo support (who were awsome), I can now emulate the Canon RC5 remote with my iPAQ and control the shutter on my Canon Digital Rebel. You will need a device file from www.mynevo.com (which won't be there for a few months). In the mean time, Chieh agreed to post the file and instructions on this site. Please stay tuned...

Hi all,

I can't believe I managed to simulate the RC-1 on an old OFA5 (UK if it helps). I entered the TV magic code 012. This could correspond to some Philips, Phonola, Erres,Aristona and Ansonic TVs. If you have one of these OFA5s then after entering the code, press and hold the TV on/off button until you are ready for the instant shot or quick press/release to get the 2 second timer.

Good Luck,

Battus

Wed Aug 25 04:55:56 PDT 2004

Hi all,

Sorry to harp on. The previous message was partly true. It will operate the remote function but it is not very controllable (sometimes shoots immediately, sometimes times 2s). If I was to use this remote OFA5, I would use the VCR code 320 as rewind and FF give reliable 2s timer operation. Also, the scan button conveniently gives repeated 2s shots until pressed again, if that sort of thing tickles you, as it were. The "volume down" on many Japanese VCR codes esp. Ferguson reliably trigger it but unreliably time/instant shoot.

Cheers,

Battus

I stumbled upon this discussion thread by accident and was very intrigued. I own a Digital Rebel (300D), have been around cameras, electronics and computers my whole life and it never occurred to me that any IR remote (properly programmed) could operate my camera!
I received 12, X-10 UR41A series, palm-sized, remote controllers free when I purchased the wireless alarm system for my home, so I gave it a try.
Low and Behold it Worked! I went through the entire series of numbers for ?MGA? products without success. Then I simply used the code first mentioned (132) and now the P+ (Channel up button) causes the shutter to release.
This remote is VERY small, not much bigger than the RC-5 and is meant for basic control functions, Vol+, VOL-, P+, P-, Mute and Power. It also has a bottle opener and wine opener. The only odd thing is what is noted by others that it sometimes triggers after 2 secs and sometimes right away.
Thanks for this info!

Bill
Tue Oct 5 10:22:40 PDT 2004

Bill says that code 132 on a X10 UR41A remote works but we have no way to tell what actual product that corresponds to. Actually I found a mapping for this remote and this code is one of the ones for a Wards. Never heard of that brand. I will test it as soon as I get home.

A couple years ago I built a wireless remote control for my Rebel 2000. It is based off a $10 Zenith wireless doorbell and a 556 integrated circuit to clean-up the door bell signal into something that the camera can use. I fitted my circuit board into the existing doorbell box by removing the speaker and C-sized batteries and using AAA batteries instead.

When I press the doorbell transmitter the autofocus activates, it waits about a 1/2 second then fires the shutter.

I've always ment make a web page with the circuit diagram and photos of it.

There is one bug it it. If I set the camera on anything except "dummy mode" (green box) In will get multiple pictures because the shutter signal stays high during the entire time that the door bell is "ringing" the bell. This could be fixed by adding another 556 chip or perhaps better engineering using the existing components.

I am a software developer who's knowledge of electronics comes from classes I took in highschool over 25 years ago.

Hi everybody I found the way to use my IPAQ with a Digital Rebel. You have to unzip the file EOS300D.zip (that contains a CCF file) (http://www.handy.ru/board/download.php?id=1759) and use it with a Remote control soft for Ipaq like "TV remote controller 5.5" (www.pdawin.com)

I tried and succeeded(at least partially) in triggering my Canon EOS Rebel with the remote that came with Panasonic TV. I did it by the "search" method prescibed in the TV's manual. Some of you all are writing because of the cameras failure to shoot after trying codes that were successful by others. I would suggest that you make sure the camera is in "remote" mode. As for my partial success, the camera doesn't fire every time and sometimes freezes up the camera. I think I'll try one of the other remotes used in this forum and I'll let you all know.

Hi all!
After reading this, I decided to try it for myself, on my Canon 500D. I have a PDA with remote control software installed. It's a HP rx3715 and the software is from Nevo. I tried it with the definitions set for "satellite", brand "Echostar" (not "Echosat" as described in other posts!!!) and the code "13". It works fine with these settings, but I haven't tried that much (just made the discovery right now!). Anyway, just to let you know; maybe it will be usefull for someone.

Hi everybody,

I am able to do 2 second delay shooting on a Canon 5D Mark II. This was done using a General Electric ( GE 24993 ) Infrared Remote.
The subsidiary which makes this IR remote is named Jasco.

Many (or most) of the buttons will fire the shutter but only with a 2 second delay. I have not accomplished a non-delayed trigger
of the shutter yet.

The code used is 0612 for the Echostar Satellite Receiver.

IMPORTANT: You must put the camera in a self timer mode by using the "Drive" setting. As mentioned in a post above, this
drive setting icon has a little clock face beside some horizontal lines which indicate "infrared rays" being shot from the remote.
On the 5D Mark II, there are two of these modes. One for a 2 second delay and another for a 10 second delay. Either one worked
for me.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the camera has not fallen asleep while you are attempting to trigger it. If it has, depress the cameras
manual shutter release half way down to wake it up!

IMPORTANT: Make sure auto focus and any other feature which might prevent the camera from firing are TURNED OFF! Use the
manual mode to force the camera to fire regardless of light. This is only necessary while you experiment with the camera and
remote to obtain the correct code.

IMPORTANT: There is only one Infrared eye (sensor) on the 5D Mark II. It is the little circle above the red self timer indicator light
on the front of the camera body. You might need to aim the remote directly at this sensor with no obstructions. I own Canon's
RC-1 Infrared shutter release and it usually won't work with any obstructions. It needs a very direct line of sight. I'm sorry I
bought it. It's only just a little bit better than nothing at all.

If anyone knows of other remote settings for the 5D and 5D Mark II, I would really appreciate the info. I've included URL's below.

Thanks & Good Luck!

http://www.cox.com/support/digitalcable/dvr/pdf/dvr_univerem . . .
This was for a TWC cable box.

Turn on your camera.
On the remote control, press TV once; it blinks once. Then press and hold SET UP until the TV key blinks twice.
ENTER 9-9-1. The TV key blinks twice.
Aim the remote control at the camera and press PWR once.
Press CH+ a number of times and stop when the cam fires.
Press SETUP once to lock in the code. The TV key will blink twice.

The ch+ button at the bottom will fire shutter (or in bulb press once each to open/close).
The ch- seems to give the 2 second delay.
The move button fired immediately, but then gave 2 sec delay next.
hmm...

Anyway, I don't know the code#, I ran through ~20 codes in seach mode.

There is according to the Canon manual pg45 a 5-10 sec delay between shots.

General Electric ( GE 24993 ) Infrared Remote works fine with Canon EOS 7D too. The code used is 0612 for the Echostar Satellite Receiver. 2 seconds delay only.

Read Ennis post for more details.

I have a Canon EOS600D (Rebel T3i)

I was able to get the Harmony 880 Universal Remote control to allow me to trigger the shutter,
Selecting from the Harmony Software: Television -> TV -> Telefunken and searching for 0702 and accepting the default returned result.

To take a photo, I had to use the "Input Tuner" hotkey.

Hope that helps somebody else.

Ok wanted to tell you all that I used an old Zenith MBC 4420 Universal remote and programed it to Mitsubishi's VCR with code 222 and got my EOS Elan IIe to work. Several buttons perform the same functions so you would have to learn yours. on mine the TV/VCR-Source activates auto focus and then releases the shutter. Button number 9 activates the 2 second timer. Keep playing with it and remember what button does what.
