Casio Exilim EX-Z16 - A Solid Performing Entry-Level Point-and-Shoot

Although it's been on the market for over a year, the Casio Exilim EX-Z16 Digital Camera continues to be a top seller and definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a simple and affordable point-and-shoot camera. Extremely affordable (less than $100 at the high end and often selling between $75 and $90), it does not skimp on features. So those looking to purchase their first pocket-sized camera need not look any further, since this little beauty will give you great photos and lots of additional features that are usually reserved for cameras in a higher price tier. The Casio Exilim EX-Z16 is a solid performing digital camera from a company that is known for its electronics superiority.

Although tiny in size, the Exilim EX-Z16 has rich features that start with a 12 megapixel image and a 3x optical and 4x digital zoom. Although there are cameras which have more powerful zooms, this is adequate for the beginner, since the trade off for a more powerful zoom often is a blurry picture.

As with all small point-and-shoot cameras, the EX-Z16 takes its best pictures outdoors, under optimum lighting conditions. There is a built-in flash to help with indoor shots or fill light, but if you shoot a lot of photos in dimly lit areas with available light, you may be disappointed. If these are your usual shooting conditions, you may want to check for a model with a little more tolerance. Again, the results are perfectly acceptable to most people who just want quick, easy and good-looking photos, but under certain conditions, the photos taken without a flash tend to be muddy or washed out. One caveat that all shutterbugs should know: If you use the flash, the subjects closest to the camera are going to come out great, but those in the background will lose contrast.

The Casio Exilim EX-Z16 has lots of features which make this more than a point-and-shoot model. There are eight different modes, including a manual override, so you can make selections based on lighting conditions indoors or outdoors. There is also a “Best Shot” function, which is great for the casual shooter. The camera automatically analyzes your scene and chooses the best combination of camera settings to ensure that your shot comes out picture-perfect.

Other standard features on the EX-Z16 include a self-timer, a bright and easy-to-see 1.7” viewfinder screen and a long-lasting, rechargeable battery. It uses a standard SDHC or SD memory card.
The bottom line is that the Exilim EX-Z16 is a dandy little entry-level camera for someone who wants to snap quick photos that will be uploaded to Facebook or videos for YouTube. It's easy to stick in your pocket or purse and have at the ready for impromptu picture-taking situations. It's affordable and looks and feels good in your hands. However, if you are a seasoned photographer, you will most likely find faults and flaws with this model, even though it has lots of nifty features. But you can't beat the Exilim EX-Z16 for its price and it's definitely better than using your cell phone to snap those spur of the moment photos.
