A Reliable Performer -- The Olympus E-450

Olympus recently announced the Olympus E-450, a new entry-level DSLR camera from their E-System range. The 10 mega pixel, Live MOS sensor based E-450 is an evolution over its predecessor, the E-420 and features an updated TruePic III+ image processor. The camera construction utilizes fiber-glass reinforced plastic, ensuring a tough, durable, yet a light-weight body (380 g - body only). In fact the E-450 is one of the smaller and lighter entry level DSLRs in the market today.

The Olympus E-450 is designed to work with a wide range of E-System accessories, which allows users to choose from 19 different lenses with a focal ranges of 7 to 300mm. Be it in a point-and-shoot mode with auto settings or a manual mode, the E-450 is designed to be easy to use, even for an average amateur.

Some notable features include the Supersonic Wave Filter system to keep dust off the sensor, a face detection system which can track up to eight faces at a time and adjust the settings accordingly. The Wireless Flash Control allows you to control external wireless flash units remotely.

Shadow Adjustment Technology in the E-450 allows the system to analyze light and dark areas in a scene and adjust the exposure settings to optimum levels. Red-eye reduction is also built in. Exposure compensation can be adjusted in 1/3 step increments between +/- 5EV.

The E-450 also comes with the 'Perfect Shot' Preview function, which allows users to compare a picture under different settings before actually clicking. Also included are Olympus's creative art filters, which allows users to select a pop art, pin hole or a soft focus picture effect.

Sensitivity can be adjusted from an ISO 100, all the way up to an ISO 1600. Image composition can be done via the High-contrast 6.9cm (2.7 inch) HyperCrystal II LCD which has a 176 viewing angle or via the Eye-level single-lens reflex viewfinder.

The rated battery life with the included BLS-1 Li-Ion battery is approximately 500 shots, when used with the optical view finder and around 250-300 shots when used with the LCD. This is quite significant and should be sufficient for most users.

The verdict, as corroborated by many professionals and reviewers is that while the Olympus E-450 may not be the best of the breed, it certainly is a reliable performer and certainly has enough features to more than justify the pricing.

Who were the professionals and reviewers consider this thing isn't supposed to ship until July 2009? Does this mean you actually used a pre-production model?
