Fixed focus high megapixel digital camera (homemade)

From time to time I have to take some pictures of some small objects like electrical connectors so I can find an exact replacement. I have a point and shoot digital camera with a macro mode, but, the autofocus will focus on my fingers that are holding the wire or something so the thing I really want to take a picture of isn't in focus.

I was thinking if I could couple some sort of simple point and shoot camera that is in focus from about 2 feet to infinity with a high megapixel digital camera I could then just zoom in to the item I want and crop out the rest.

Anyone have any ideas? If I just took the sensor out of a digital camera and put it in say an old instamatic and left if all attached somehow to the electronics of the digital camera, approximatel what shutter speed/aperture would I need for daylight shooting?

Interesting idea. The fixed lens is probably made with a focal point that is a certain distance from the sensor plane. So It's not likely that you can make it zoom without additional lens elements.

Here is an article on getting similar results. Maybe it will be useful to you: Macro Photography with What You Got
