As I alluded to when I wrote the "Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM vs. Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM" article, my 28-135mm lens has failed or is out of calibration. It seems to fail to lock focus quite often and when it does lock focus, it's usually focused on the background, not the subject.
I've sent the lens back to Canon Service Center in Irvine for repair. The estimate is $90, which consists of $82 for labor and $8 for shipping.
Canon's service seems to be faster and faster. In the past, they've relied on mail service. But in this case, I've received an e-mail only two days after mailing out the lens. And I could approve the repair online, through their web site. They still support mailing the approve back through postal mail. But I find the online technology quick and efficient. I'll keep you guys posted on the status.

I've just received an e-mail confirmation that the lens has been repaired and shipped back to me . . .
"We are pleased to confirm that the service you requested on your EF 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS has been completed and your equipment has been shipped to you on 27-DEC-06 ."
The repair cost hasn't changed; still $90.

I got the lens back today. The package was neat and tidy; very professional. The service details showed:
"Replace listed parts IS lens unit.repaired IS vibrate and barrel loose.cleaned and checked all functions."
The repair is covered under warranty for 6 months.

I just opened up the repair estimate letter that came via snail mail. It's only a tad late, since I've already gotten my repaired lens back. ;-) I love the Internet.
And as you know, the repair estimate and the final repair bill were the same. Upon carefully reading the repair estimate on paper, I found the following condition could have increased the repair cost:
"Please note that in the unlikely event that any additional internal damage is found due to liquid/water, sand, corrosion, battery leakage, or impact (such as dropping the unit), a revised estimate will be sent for your authorization."
Good thing the failure of my lens was just simply wear and tear.
