Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 -- A Dependable SLR Lens

Canon is a Japanese multinational corporation and they are specialists in image and optical products. Their products include cameras, steppers, photocopiers and computer printers. EF 24mm f/2.8 is a small wide angle lens from Canon. It has a decent build quality.

The lens gets constructed with a combination of ten elements in ten groups. With f/2.8, the lens offers sweet spot of sharpness. The dimension of this lens is 2.7 x 1.9 inches (67.5 x 48.5mm) (D x L). The focal length of the lens is 24 mm. The lens maximum aperture is f/2.8 and the minimum aperture is f/22. The minimum close focus range will be 25 cm (10 inches). The maximum magnification ratio is 0.16x. The size of the filter is 58 mm. The lens has a metal body mount with plastic filter threads.

The lens uses an AFD (Arc Form Drive) motor for the autofocus operation. The autofocus can be overridden by using the manual focus mode. The lens provides 84 degrees of picture angle to shot images. It includes six straight aperture blades and is hexagonal shaped. The lens is light in weight and it has beautiful color rendition. The lens offers sharper images with excellent contrast. The lens is small, but it provides excellent performance throughout the range of images.

This lens has no problems in mounting on either the Canon full or sub frame camera bodies. On the Canon body, the lens has an effective field view of 39 mm (1.6x) or 31 mm (1.3x). Corner softness is significant with 3 to 7 blur units depending upon the corners. The lens has some chromatic aberrations (CA), but it gets stepped down progressively. Corner shading is not an issue with this lens. This Canon lens does not change length during focusing. The front element of this lens does not rotate. The lens has 0.5 % of barrel distortion at the corners and 0.3 % of barrel distortion at the center.

The f/2.8 aperture is very easy to use with slow, fine grain films and in low light conditions. It contains a window distance scale, which provides distance information of the subject in feet and meters. The lens weighs 270 grams (9.5 ounces). The lens is very compact and superbly designed. It is a nice convenient lens to use, and it will attract all the users. It is an inexpensive lens and a good performer.
