Extra Silent Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 lens

Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Mega O.I.S. is a 4 by 3 standard, high zoom lens with focal range of 14mm to 150mm i.e. 35mm film equivalent of 28mm to 300mm, minimum aperture of F22 and maximum aperture of F3.5 wide, F5.6 Tele. It provides high edge to edge resolution with 10.7x of long range telephoto zoom and is good for capturing nice images in various photography conditions such as portrait, landscape, architecture and wildlife.

Leica D Vario 14-150mm is an interchangeable lens especially designed for DSLR cameras having 15 elements in 11 groups that includes one extra low dispersion ED lens and four aspherical lenses. The aspeherical elements reduce distortion at all settings and the whole glass group is designed as per stringent Leica standard so as to provide excellent optical performance.

Lens has 7 rounded aperture blades so as to produce smooth results in out of focus situations at large aperture. Lens has an Extra Silent technology employed in AF system that provides quiet and fast operation along with high torque that helps in providing accuracy and quick responsiveness. Its AF motor is operated by turning focus ring and one can use full manual focus in single AF mode setting.

Leica D 14-150mm has an ultrasonic AF system and this contrast AF mechanism when used with DMC-L10 can allow functions such as Face Detection along with putting zoom ring, focus ring and aperture ring in user control. This lens has closest focal distance of 50cm at all zoom settings, accepts filters of size 72mm, has angle of viewing of 75 to 8.2 degrees and magnification of 0.18x i.e. 0.36x in terms of 35mm film cameras.

On top of it, there is Mega Optical Image Stabilization that reduces blur in hand shake conditions providing advanced correction. Such a design can capture macro shots without the use of a tripod. There is also a provision for switching off the OIS functionality with a dedicated button.

Leica D Vario has a body of high quality plastic coupled with a metal mount, is 520g in weight and has dimensions of 78.5 x 90.4mm. Its depth of field capability is fair and there are not notable vignetting issues. On negative side, users can observe lateral chromatic aberration but same can be corrected manually post processing. Lens is supplied with snap-on, petal shaped hood. At available price, Leica Elmarit 14-150m is a value for money and is capable to capture impressive wide variety shots with clarity in different conditions.
