LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18mm f/3.8 ASPH -- An Appealing SLR Lens

Leica is a German company best known for producing cameras, microscopes and geosurvey equipment. Leica expands the range of focal lengths of lenses for its Leica M system and launched its new compact wide angle lens called LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm f/3.8 ASPH SLR (Single Lens Reflex) Lens.

LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm lens get constructed with a combination of eight lenses in seven groups. The dimension of this lens is 58 x 61 mm (2.28 x 2.4 inches) (length x diameter). The lens contains two aspherical surfaces. The focal length will be 18.3 mm. It provides extremely short focal length of 18 mm which offers new opportunities of creative expression. The maximum aperture is f/3.8 and the minimum aperture is f/16. The focusing range of the lens is 0.7 m to infinity. It contains nine blades in it.

ELMAR-M 18 mm lens provides great image quality and compact in size. It has a screw on type of rectangular lens hood. The eye piece of this lens is rubberized to protect eyeglasses against scratching. The additional feature of Leica rangefinder system is the new finder, the Leica Bright Line finder M 18 mm. The finder contains parallax compensation markings which get used for close-up distances under 6.6 feet. The finder also contains markings for smaller image fields of Leica M8 models. This lens is very useful for digital M photography.

The initial aperture f/3.8 can be used at any circumstances without any limitations. It provides diagonal, horizontal and vertical angle of view for 35 mm. The diagonal angle of view for FF (diagonal, horizontal, vertical) will be 100, 90, 67 degrees respectively and for APS-C, 84, 74, 53 degrees respectively. With shot wide open, ELMAR-M 18 mm offers depth of field from infinity to 3.93 feet. The vignetting and distortion have been effectively corrected in this lens. ELMAR-M 18 mm give sharp, uniformly exposed crystal clear images from corner to corner.

ELMAR-M 18 mm includes a Leica M quick change bayonet having six bit lens identification bar code for the digital M models. It is very suitable for use with digital photography (18 x 27 mm) and in films (24 x 36 mm). ELMAR-M 18 mm weighs 310 grams (10.93 ounces). This Leica ELMAR-M 18 mm lens can also be used on all type of Leica M camera models. It provides outstanding contrast and reproduction of details. ELMAR-M 18 mm is solidly built and offer great quality. This lens will tempt the photojournalists, street photographers and everyone.
