Microdrive divergence: CF-mode vs. IDE-mode

Stop diverging!

Microdrive was originally invented in the form of CompactFlash Type II. It was useable in digital cameras and other CF Type II devices. In this regards, they were operating in CF-mode.

All of a sudden, whether it is due to people removing these drives from MP3 players or not, IDE-mode has surfaced and are appearing in these MP3 players.

IDE-mode drives do not work with digital cameras, but sometimes may be reformatted into CF-mode. Stop diverging! Why do we need two different modes of operation? Is it simply to stop people from removing Microdrives for other uses? Or is there really a technical merit?

Anyway, I look forward (wish) to seeing new digital cameras in the market where they would work with both CF-mode and IDE-mode CompactFlash cards. Perhaps, then they would come out with a third mode . . . non-digital-camera-mode??? Care to guess its name?
