DCR HC48E not recognized by the Computer

One of my relative gifted me a DCR HC48E Camcorder (Brand New). When I connect to the PC through ILINK IEEE1394 Port, the camcorder lcd shows "DV IN" and when it is played it shows "DV Out". But the PC does not recognize the Camcorder. It says "A Video Capture Device is not found". While disconnecting the Ilink Cable from the PC the "DV In" display disappears in the Camcorder. Kindly provide me the solution, I use Windows XP SP2.

The "DV IN" and "DV Out" display is normal. That means your camcorder is working correctly with the Firewire connection.

It's really strange that Windows XP displays "A Video Capture Device is not found". Windows XP should recognize the Firewire device automatically.

Try this to diagnose the problem. Right-clicking on "My Computer", clicking on "Properties", clicking on the "Hardware" tab, and then clicking on the "Device Manager" button. Monitor the "Device Manager" dialog while you plug the Firewire cable into the computer (with your camcorder on). See what pops up in "Device Manager".

If what pops up has an exclamation icon or a question mark icon, then the driver is not working correctly. It might not even be the right driver. You can right click on the broken driver and "remove" it.

Cross Reference
See what to expect in "Device Manager" by referring to the "How to get the IBM PC Camera to work with Windows XP" article.

After removing the driver, unplug the Firewire cable from your computer. Plug it back in after a few seconds (say 5). Hopefully, this time around, Windows XP would have found the correct driver. If that doesn't work, you can try updating the driver.

Thanks for your prompt reply Chieh Cheng. But everything works fine. If I connect another HC48e, it is being recognized by the PC. Where would be problem even if DV In & DV Out appears?

That's strange. I would compare the driver that shows up on Device Manager and see if they are the same driver. If not, the broken one should be removed.

Another thing to try, is to plug both of these camcorders into another computer, if they both work on the second computer, it means the driver is installed incorrectly on Windows for one of the camcorder.

Even though the camcorders are the same, Windows might recognize them as two different devices. Each camcorder may have it's own "serial number" for initialization with the computer.

Atlast I found out the problem. The problem is with the Handycam Station. While the camcorder is attached to the another HC48 Station, it works. Have to replace the handycam station or repair it.
