Sony HDR-SR5 exposed to moisture

My Sony HDR-SR5 digital handycam was exposed to moisture... a friend spilled beer on it... and now it will not function at all. Sony informs me that the minimum service charge is $341, and that this does not include damage from moisture. I can't afford to fix it, so I'll have to try it myself. I've heard rumors that cleaning with rubbing alcohol might remove residue without damaging the electronics; can anyone share experience with this? Other suggestions?
