Sony HDR-SR5 issue

I have had my Sony HDR-SR5 since 2007 and have kept it in excellent condition and honestly never dropped it or got it wet or did anything that would damage it. However, today it literally all of a sudden developed a problem.

A little over a week ago I used it to film a family event at my house without any issue.

The camera sat unmoved and untouched with the battery in it until tonight when I turned it on to upload the video to my computer. As soon as I turned it on, I heard the shutter which covers the lens make a strange noise, like it couldn't open. At the time the lens was not facing me. By the time I realized there was an issue and I turned the camera lens toward me, it finally had opened. However, I wanted to see if it would happen again so I turned it off. The shutter closed, but then suddenly, even though the switch was still on off, it turned on again (the startup sound played, the shutter opened, and the LCD lit). Then, a few seconds later, it turned off (shutter closed and LCD turned off). Then turned on again. As long as the battery is in, the process repeats over and over. When the switch is on on, the shutter remains open and the camera functions. Everything else as far as I can tell on the camera works (video recording, still pictures, playback, touchscreen, etc.) So the only way to truly turn the camera off is to remove the battery. Also, there is now no way to charge the battery (I don't have an external charger) since the camera won't turn off.

I tried pressing the reset button but this didn't do anything to help. Sony support also had me try removing the battery with the unit on, waiting 1 minute, turning it off, and then replacing the battery, but this too did not help. They had no other suggestions besides to send it in to be looked at. However, I am not willing to pay nearly $400 when for a little more I could get a new camera.

I searched and searched online, but cannot find anyone else who seems to be having this issue. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

Thanks so much in advance!
