computer doesn't recognize camera

I am trying to transfer video from my sony digital video camera model number dcr-trv20. I plugged the firewire cable into the computer and then into my camera and then turn the camera on and the computer doesn't recognize that there is a camera attached to it. It worked fine a couple times a few months ago, but it isn't working now. I'm running Windows XP home, and I actually tried it on two computers, both running xp home edition. Neither one recognized it. I even tried my friend's firewire cable and it didn't work with it either, which makes me think there is something wrong with the camera. What can I do?

Thanks

Did you turn on the camcorder and put it into VCR mode? The camcorder can only talk to the computer in playback mode.

Yes, the camcorder is in vcr mode. Does it matter what order I turn things on/plug things in?

I don't think the order matters. Try looking the Device Master when everything is connected and turned on. See if there are any drivers that has exclamation marks on them.
