I am having a problem with my 5700. In all user sets the camera flashes the red SB light and the green AF light does not come on. I have tried fresh batteries, gone through all the trouble shooting items in the manual. I have tried multiple speedlight settings without any result. What am I missing. I have reset all user sets. It will take a picture as long as the flash is turned off. It will pop up the speedlight when you select autoflash or the other flash options, but always does the same thing, flash the red SB light and the green AF does not come on.
I'va also tried resetting factory default setting by removing the battery and the memory card for more than 48 hours but this does not work
My other problem is that my Coolpix was bought in Mauritius six months ago from a retailer who imports goods from Singapour. That means that my guarantee is in Singpour and it ends 20th august 2004. I am not vey keen sending my coolpix back in Mauritius for a trip to Singapour afterwards!!!!. This will costs much and I'am not sure that people will care and really solve my problem
What can I do? I've contacted Nikon France but they don't seem very willing to help me cause My coolpx is a non european good !!!!.
I've been on the net and found many people having the same problem........this seems that it is really a problem with the 5700 software.;..
Anyway, any suggestions will be veyry helpful !!!!

I'm in the same boat. Made the trip home to Jamaica already to take some "incredible" shots and nothing but darkness. Any one have any solutions???? Does this mean that the camera is broken????

My 5700 (purchased in UK) worked fine for a year, then developed the same problem with the SB light. I found I could get round it by selecting BSS. Will still only work if BSS is selected. Takes a little longer to take a photo, but at least it works.

I have the same problem and have contacted Nikon. They told me that it is a metering problem and I should bring it in and they will send it away to be fixed.

I just posted a comment yesterday that duplicates the posts here. (Should have read some history first.)
Anyway, I couldn't find anything on the Nikon website that would help. How did you get them to agree to fix it? Is your camera still under warranty?

You need to replace the light sensor. Some shops will do this (Costs between $60 and $180). If you're confident with electronics you could do it yourself.. I did the first time ($20 in parts from an dead 5700 a friend had bought and drowned in a pool) (plus knocked myself on the floor when my wife handed me the flash and removed the guard.. ow!) The second time I sent it to the local camera store who fixed it ($140) and the third time I sent it to Nikon ($165).
Long story short, it wasn't worth it to fix it any of those times. I should have saved myself the money and just bought a new SLR.

My 5700 had the sensor problem and was repaired by NIKON at no cost. Now I have the "flash issue" - I have talked with NIKON today at several levels and they say that no such issue has EVER come to their attention. If the problem exist, they (NIKON) is not aware of it! Therefore, no recall and it will cost $160 to $200 plus to repair the flash.
I don't understand how this is possible? Having read over 100 individuals emails/forums that relate the identical problem -- could it be possible that none have approached NIKON? This is a great camera and should preform well for a number of years, --- what can be done to get the company to acknowledge this issue and repair free of charge.
Thanks,
Tim
PS - I have two of the 5700's

This is the response I got from Nikon about the fault with my camera when I identified it as a common problem:
It is unfortunate to hear of so many incidents involving this similar fault, however, as I stated previously, this is not a know fault and at this time Nikon is not performing repairs free of charge. You can send you item in to the service centre to have it assessed, but unless it is under warranty the item will be given an estimated cost for repair. I will forward your comments on to the appropriate department. Should you require further assistance please update your incident as I am happy to help.
Kind Regards,

So don't expect any help there. I have cut my losses and bought a different make camera. No more Nikons for me and I won't be recommending them. Quite the opposite. It may be a good camera bu if it doesn't work and the manufacture is prepared to treat its customers this way then it isn't worth the hassle.

Ik have the same problem with a coolpix5700 that has just been repaired for the CCD-chip last year for free. Now I have also that flash-problem and Nikon Belgium says that they never heard about the problem and fixing it will last for 3 weeks and no warranty offcoarse.
Shame that it happens mostly after the repair of the CCD chip. I have also a second coolpix5700, also repaired for the CCD-chip and no problem with the flash. It's been repaired for 3 years already. No idea what the difference is between both camera's , but maybe I'm lucky sofar and will it fail in the future.
I also thought that Nikon had such a good service ?!

Had the same problem also. Unfotunately it was a good camera until the flash stopped working and the camera wouldnt take any shots as the SB light was constantly on and AF woulnt work. Will never buy a Nikon camera again. Paid $800 for a lemon!

Title: Nikon Coolpix 5700 Flash Failure
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: I love my Nikon Coolpix 5700 but the flash component has died two times now. I had it repaired the first time (no warranty) and it set me back $165. I don't know if it's worth spending the money again and having the same problem repeat itself. Has anyone else had a problem with the flash? Any sugges . . .
