Coolpix L18 display

I was in India 2 weeks ago, temp was 98 with 89 percent humidity, about to make a picture of the Taj Mahal when the display on my 3-month old L18 went out. It looks like a bullet hit it and the screen is white with a black blob on it. I am very reluctant to pay to send it to Nikon for warranty repair after reading similar posts from others. They were told that it was impact damage and not covered by warranty after they had sent their L-series cameras in. I know for a fact mine was not caused by an impact; however, I also know it would be useless to argue the point with the people at Nikon, since they won't even talk to you on the phone. Any recommendations? Or should I just write it off to experience? Looks like by the time you are 62 years old, you would learn to buy your inexpensive camera from Walmart and not online. If I had bought it at Walmart, I wouldn't be having this problem.
