Nikon Coolpix P100

The Coolpix P100 is a great little camera and a fantastic alternative to a DSLR. First of all the camera isn't particularly big or heavy and is much lighter than any DSLR I've had and lighter than the similar range of cameras to the Coolpix that Fujifilm sell of which I've owned two. It's extremely portable and is a snug fit in any pocket. It's right in between a compact and a DSLR. It's also easy to use and intuitive too like every other Nikon product I've bought.

The picture quality is great too. I've used other bridge cameras similar to the P100 and the image quality hasn't been as good as this camera, despite the fact that these cameras were 12 and 13 Megapixels respectively. I would however upgrade the Image Quality on the settings from Normal to Fine so you really are getting the best out of this camera. I've found that even at 800 ISO the images are of a good quality with little pixelation.

Sometimes images will look great on the display and upon processing them in Photoshop don't look as good. It's a real shame and lets the camera down somewhat although I will say that I think this is a common issue with Bridge Cameras and is not limited to the Coolpix P100. I have a feeling it has something to do with the way the camera auto focuses - I've found turning the sharpness up helps a lot.

Switching to video is easy too, just press a button on the back of the camera and it instantly switches from picture to video. HD video is the best I've ever got from any Bridge camera. I will say I haven't tried this feature out as much as I'd like.

In terms of modes this camera excels at Macro Photography - One of the best I've ever seen. The optical zoom is also incredible considering the distance the camera can zoom too!

The P100 also has a HDR mode which is a really nice feature, but doesn't work as well as it should. I've found a few minutes editing images on Photoshop gets about the same results, which is a shame because it's a really nice idea.

Overall the camera is a really good buy, although I hope that the P500 resolves some of the issues I've experienced with this particular model.
