Nikon Coolpix 5700 Flash Failure

I love my Nikon Coolpix 5700 but the flash component has died two times now. I had it repaired the first time (no warranty) and it set me back $165. I don't know if it's worth spending the money again and having the same problem repeat itself. Has anyone else had a problem with the flash? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. The SB light just flashes forever. This is a design problem which Nikon will not admit to. I would suggest you change to Canon and cut your losses.

The flash will work if you use the timer.

My flash unit has died as well. Even when I used the timer, it didn't go off. Since it's out of warrenty, I've just bought a Nikon SPEEDLITE SB-30 external Flash unit which should sort out the problem. I don't think changing to canon is an option. This is such a good camera is most respects.

I bought a speed light, external flash, when mine did this.. That didn't fix it for me. It was the light metering aspect of the camera that errors out - not the flash itself.

I ahve a Nikon Coolpix 5700. It's been in twice for repairs to the speedlite - at £100 a time! On both occasions the display gives a message to the effect that the speedlight is in the down position (even when it isn't) and it fails to flash. This has jsut started happening again and I am very reluctant to shell out more money for a new speedlite card! Any suggestions as to what else to do (other than buy a Cannon)?

I bought my 5700 just when they were released in the UK and it cost a fortune. Two week after purchase the flash stopped working. It took three and a half months, tons of phone calls and two round trips to Nikon's repair department to get it fixed.

Now, some years later, it has gone again, exactly the same problem. I can't believe Nikon haven't owned up to this one. Perhaps a class-action might get them to admit the issue.

Change to Canon??? I have a Canon A620 that is two weeks past the warranty. Even though the lens drive system is notoriously prone to failure (check Canon E18 error), Canon will not admit a design flaw either. Its only function now is to sit on top of a piece of paper to prevent the paper from blowing away. The cost to fix the $149 camera is $150.

I'm having the same SB error. Pretty sad Nikon isn't owning up to the design flaw.

I bought a Coolpix 5700 when they first came out in the UK for about 850. WIthin 3 months it had to have the gears on the focus/zoom mechanism replaced (fortunately under warranty); then the speedlite packed up (display said speedlite was down when actually it was uP!) That cost me 100. A year later, the same fault occurred - another 100. Now it's happened a third time - only this time the display image has broken up as well. I've given up with it now and will buy myself a decent camera rather than throw more good money after bad.

I always thought Nikon was a good make of camera - I will never again buy one of their products!

I also had the same problems with the flash plus it would not hold a charge. I went to the Nikon site and looked up the 5700 and found there was a service advisory where they will fix the problems associated with it for free. I filled out the form and did not write down any symptoms and sent the camera in and lo and behold in a week they sent me the camera back completely fixed and free of charge!

Well the SB not working is all down to a connector that is soldered onto the main PCB coming loose. I've fixed a few, but it is only for the brave, with a steady hand. If you like I can fix yours

Ive had the cool pix 5700 since 2004 and the flash for a couple of years, but then stopped working. Out of frustration I started flicking the flash and it started working again and I've been flicking ever since. Still takes great photos, but Its time to get it fixed or buy a new one.... Any feed back on the New Nikon D3 camera out?

I am buying mine now from ebay for $135.00 (US). It is stated to have a one year warrantee and new. When bidding, I thought I was bidding making a decent bargain. After reading this, I am not so sure.

I just got the problem with the flash. No way to take picture unless I prohibit flash from the knob. Seeing how many people have had the same issue, I really wander how come Nikon hadn't issued a service advisory. My next camera will be Canon for sure.

I am having the same problem with my 5700. In all user sets the camera flashes the red SB light and the green AF light does not come on. I have tried fresh batteries, gone through all the trouble shooting items in the manual. I have tried multiple speedlight settings without any result. Went to camera store to get quote on repair. $250.00 OUCH

same problem with the red SB bubble that keeps blinking. Nikon just made a price = 240 for repair. No warranty. And then they told me that this problem is just 1% of the repairs to the coolpix5700 and that this is a fine camera with expensive parts inside and worth the repair. New camera's like the P90 are not that qualitative they told me. What a commercial !!

My has the same flash problem. Had the camera since 2004, the flash stopped working in 2007. You would think that with just the amount of people here having the same problem they would admit they screwed up. There are probably many, many more of us with the same problem. Best to you all!

It is such a pity that this flaw has wrecked the reputation of this otherwise excellent camera....It suffered a similar fate when the Sony image sensor problem arose..Nikon owned up to that fault, and until a few months ago, they were happy to replace the sensor F.O.C.

My own 5700 has suffered a similar fate, I cannot justify the high cost of repairs so I shall consign this otherwise perfectly functioning camera to the trash bin...

What do I do now..The answer is easy, I bought Pentax....3 year guarantee and leading edge technology + Loads of lens's at a reasonable price...

I'm just hoping my old Coolpix 8700 does not suffer the same fate

I had the SB flash problem when the warranty was still valid, so I sent it out on for a repair, three weeks later I got it back all fix, but on Nikon's worksheet, it only stated "software reset white balance" and "problem fixed"! No charge.
So I was happy for a while, and then the CCD malfunction. I checked the Nikon website and found the recall notice for the faulty CCD, so I send it in again, they fixed it within a month, FOC. BUT when I got my camera back, the SB flash problem again, this time I am out of luck. I know they screwed it up while fixing the CCD. But I have no proof.

So now this 5700 of mine can only take outdoor pictures w/o the flash. Image quality still good, just no flash! The OEM rechargeable is tired, too, but I am reluctant to invest more $ on this thing. This camera now sits in the back of my closet, until one day I can find a good use of it (maybe put it in a DIY underwater casing with the auxiliary lights).

With the fear of Nikon products (and expensive accessory), I am now using the Pentax K20D, I am happy and looking good on the field!

The problem is between the card connector to the motherboard and flash. Usually is Unsoldered

the one on the motherboard signed cn305 as photos.
Resolder well with a small soldering the contacts of the connectors. Everything works.
