Nikon Coolpix 990 Repair? help!!!!!!!!

Hello Chieh Cheng,

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 990 about 4 years ago. Great little camera.
I bought it on line and got a pretty good price.
6 months ago, I (shudder) dropped it and broke the battery door which I got fixed at a local repair shop.
Now it looks like there is more of a problem than just the battery door.

When I turn the camera on, it lights up for a split second then shuts down for 5 or 10 seconds.

This repeats over and over and over. Obviously I have an electronics problem.

Now the reason Im laying this on you and not just sending this camera off to Nikon for repair.

I tried that and was informed by Nikon that the camera serial number told them that the camera was purchased off shore and they wont repair cameras sold for a low price from off shore.

I said: What!?!?!

I just found a good deal on a camera off the internet. I paid just about $900 for it.

So, my question to you is: Do you know a repair shop that can fix my camera anywhere here in the USA?

Id really appreciate it if you could help me with this.

Im assuming you would have the answers to things like this because of your knowledge of all things photographic.

(Smile)

Thanks in advance,

Hi Skip,

I have never sent a camera out to a camera repair facility outside the manufacturer's control before . . . but I know KEH does camera repair services. They even have an automated on-line repair quote system. You might give them a try. I have never gone through them to repair my cameras. But they are very professional when I ordered used camera gears from them. Good luck!

Many of us have had the same problem. I have tried many of the fixes that I have found on the internet on my 990 with unsatisfactory results. I came up with a relatively inexpensive repair that replaces two of the plastic strikers that break with adjustable brass pins. You can do it yourself or I'll be glad to do it for you if your camera is otherwise fully functional. See http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160317945 . . .
