Once again, I'm in the market for a P&S digital camera. This time it needs to be as small as possible and support RAW, TIFF, or both. JPEG is no longer sufficient on P&S digital cameras that I own. Why? See my "Shoot in RAW, Always!" article.
So I started looking at the Nikon Coolpix series of cameras. None of Nikon DSLR's of course, because I already have several DSLR's that are capable of creating RAW files. I need something small to carry around. I have three Sony P&S digital cameras, but none supports RAW or TIFF format. I started with Nikon because I have a Nikon Coolpix 950 that can store TIFF, which was sufficient for me, but it's about to die.
After downloading and reading the manuals for Nikon's current line-up, the following cameras can and cannot support RAW/TIFF format:
RAW and TIFF
Nikon Coolpix 8400
Nikon Coolpix 8700
Nikon Coolpix 8800
JPEG Only
Nikon Coolpix 4600
Nikon Coolpix 4800
Nikon Coolpix 5600
Nikon Coolpix 5900
Nikon Coolpix 7600
Nikon Coolpix 7900
Nikon Coolpix L1
Nikon Coolpix P1
Nikon Coolpix P2
Nikon Coolpix S1
Nikon Coolpix S2
Nikon Coolpix S3
Nikon Coolpix S4
I was hoping the Nikon Coolpix S4 would fit the bill, because it is the closest to the Nikon Coolpix 950. Disappointly, only three cameras in Nikon's P&S line-up supports TIFF and RAW. All three are big cameras. 8700 and 8800 are almost the size of a DSLR. And 8400 seems big and bulky and probably won't fit the bill. I'll go to the local store and see the 8400 in person, but I think I'll be looking at other manufacturers' cameras spec soon.
This post is for your reference in case you are also looking for RAW/TIFF capable P&S digital cameras. I'll post other manufacturers' list in their relevant forums. Look there if you want to follow my investigation.

RAW on Nikon 4000/5000 series
Wait a minute...
Are you saying that the RAW hack available in previous low end COOLPIX cameras can't be done in the 4000/5000 series?

This article weren't intended to test RAW hacks on newer Coolpix digital cameras. The article was the result of research on recent Nikon digital cameras that supported RAW/TIFF files directly from the factory without using any hacks.
The answer to your question, however, is that I don't know if the RAW hacks work on the newer Coolpix digital cameras. I've tried once on a Coolpix 5600 and it did not work. If anyone has better luck, let us know
David Coffin's Decoding raw digital photos in Linux site listed many of the Nikon Coolpix digital cameras that worked with the RAW hacks. Those in the 4000/5000 series include the 4300 and 4500.
