The Nikon Coolpix L110 Feels Like a Real Camera!

Although considerably pricier than most compact point-and-shoot cameras on the market, the Nikon Coolpix L110 camera could be the compromise camera to consider if you're more than a casual photographer, but less than someone with a serious passion. This camera looks like a camera, with a prominent lens and a comfortable body that actually has a secure hand grip for helping stabilize shots. With a respectable 12.1 megapixel sensor, it comes with a very powerful 15x zoom (comparable to a 28mm to 420mm in a 35mm equivalent lens), which should be an asset when shooting events at a distance, such as football games or theatrical plays.

This perceptive camera has some really nifty features, including a facial recognition system that intuitively snaps a picture when your subject smiles and also lets you know if they've blinked. Now that is cool, if you ask me.

Although this is not a pocket-size camera, it is small enough to put in a larger purse and is not at all uncomfortable to wear on a strap around your neck. The three-inch LCD viewfinder is more than ample for composing your shots and playing them back. Some photographers will miss an optical viewfinder, but if that is something you feel is necessary, you'll have to investigate a higher-end model.

A built in flash, HD video with stereo sound, built-in memory, macro capabilities, 15 different scene modes, automatic face detection and vibration reduction image stabilization makes this a smart choice for any photographic situation. You can choose how much control you want over your photos by choosing a fully automatic mode or one of the various other scene and lighting modes. This camera goes up to ISO 6400 for those situations where there is very low light, assuring crisp and clear results.

Nikon's “Best Shot Selector” is another feature you'll fall in love with. Shooting 10 photos in rapid sequence, the best shot is saved, getting rid of those with strange smirks and smiles. And the “Smart Portrait” mode will automatically snap a photo at the right time, eliminating awkward mouth movements or closed eyes. The camera will know when you're smiling and will also know if someone blinks.

The high quality Nikkor lens optics is right up there with more expensive cameras from both Nikon and its worthy competitors. You can confidently enlarge photos to a size of 16x20 without losing any quality.

This camera is a solid performer. It's a respectable choice for the advanced amateur who wants to try his or her hand at more creative shots. It delivers what it promises and then a bit more. It may not fit in your pocket, but it looks and feels like a more traditional camera, and sometimes that makes all the difference in the world!
