DCR-PC5E will not go into playback mode

I am trying to watch in play back mode some DV tapes all was working ok then all of a sudden whenever I hit the playback button the machine fasts forward and will not playback. I have tried everything that the manual says (which isnt much) and even recalibrated which doesn't seem to work
Does anybody know how toget the camera to switch to playback mode
