You'll get much better quality if you use the Firewire port to transfer DV. See the following two articles:

If you still insist on using the USB cable, then install this driver: USBDRVEN.EXE
Once you installed the driver, plug in your camcorder and turn it on. You can now transfer the video with Windows Movie Maker or some other software.

with USB cable, i have installed the driver(picture package software). but in handycam, it is not showing usb mode in the menu. but in some other sony handycam( don't know the number) i have seen the usb mode in the menu. due to this, it is not showing/transferring the data to the pc.

Look for "USB Streaming" in the menus. You have to turn that on.

It's in the "Setup" menu. You might have to disable "Easy Handycam" to see it.

If you are having problems because you have Vista instead of XP, and still have the CD-Rom that came with the camera(Picture Package), I was finally able to import from handycam to pc, following instructions and downloading from the following page: http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/download/vista_picpa . . .

I have followed the additional hints in TrackBack and in particular the suggestions for addressing the exclamation point in Device Manager by:

[email protected]

and still end up with my Windows 7 OS not being happy with the Sony Streaming driver.

The final message I get is that there is a problem because of the fact that there is a 64 bit option issue in the Windows 7 OS.

Am I correct in assuming that it is time to "give up?"
