Canon elura70 tripod thread repair

I'm sure I'm not the first one to have this happen, but I striped out the threads on the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. I ordered a new piece from Canon, but it's proving a bit difficult to replace. does anyone have a schematic or suggestions on how to change out this piece?

You can install your own 1/4"-20 nut to serve as a tripod mount thread. See the "Hacking Digital Cameras" book for more ideas.
