MOV to AVI Conversion

While writing the Authoring DVD with Microsoft Windows Media Center, I was authoring a DVD for a relative. However, one of the videos I wanted to burn is in Apple QuickTime (MOV) format. Windows Media Center doesn't recognize the MOV format. So I needed a way to convert it into DV or AVI format. That's when I started looking for a free tool.

The free tool I found is Squared 5's MPEG Streamclip. It's a free video solution that works for both Mac and Windows. This free software can accept the following input formats:

MPEG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD, VRO, DAT, MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, TS, M2T, MMV, REC, VID, AVR, M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3

And it can output the following formats: QuickTime, AVI, DV and MPEG-4. My choice would be DV. But when I did the MOV to DV conversion, the DV wouldn't play back in Windows Media Player. So I ended up exporting to AVI, which Windows Media Center was able to read and burn to a DVD. I find the MPEG Streamclip to be a highly valuable tool and you are working with digital videos.

I've just installed MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 for Mac OS X and found that it has additional functionalities. I've made a screen shot of it and attached it below.

Tips

- MPEG Streamclip can now use most QuickTime-compatible exporters with the new command Export to Other Formats.

- Elgato Turbo.264 owners can use Export to Other Formats to quickly encode MPEG-4 files.

- MPEG Streamclip can open and download FLV files.

- MicroMV and HDV camera owners please use Apple's DVHSCap to transfer movies into your Mac; then use MPEG Streamclip to convert them.

- DreamBox and Topfield users can open, download and upload movies with MPEG Streamclip, using the Enigma and Altair menus.

As video technology become more advanced and 1920x1080 HD video becomes more popular, I'm finding that DV format (even in AVI container) is obsolete. My favorite video editors are still VirtualDub and Windows Movie Maker.

The best way to get MOV files into VirtualDub and Windows Movie Maker is to convert it to AVI using MPEG Streamclip. But AVI can contain lots of different formats. The compression that works with both VirtualDub and Windows Movie Maker is "Apple Cinepak" and "MP3". Using these compression allows you to convert unscaled 1920x1080 videos for processing.
