Just looking for some help. I have windows vista by the way. Here is the story...when I connect to my pc, I can burn straight to a disc and it comes out just fine when played on vcr. Because of multiple family members, I also put all videos on the harddrive and then can segregate each to go with interested parties. The problem is, when I burn these files from the harddrive, they dont boot up on the vcr. Be aware, I have decent computer skills and little handycam experience. I have found the formatting the disc has two options and the second one where you lock the disc and can only write to it one time works better, but now i am getting the videos with no sound. Additionally, when burned straight from the camcorder, the videos appear much the same as a movie dvd where it is broken down nicely by segments....ie...each video has its own framework(probably not the right term) where you can punch forward in the menu and bring up whichever one you are interested in. Where composed from the harddrive, it kinda categorizes them like a computer files and has no "flow". I hope you can follow what I am saying.
Thanks in advance for any help

USB or Firewire?
It sounds like when you are burning to disc straight from camcorder, you are using an Authoring tool to create a DVD disc. Whereas, when you burn disc from hard drive, you are just dragging the files to the disc and creating data disc. A data disc is generally not readable on a DVD player like a DVD disc.
What software are you using to burn directly from camcorder? And what software are you using to burn from the hard drive?

I am using the PMB software supplied with the camera. Again, I am not much of a camcorder guy and only marginal with computer/software. I burn thru the computer straight to disc and everything is fine. then i back up the same videos on harddrive to make sure i have a copy before deleting and to segregate videos for themes...family members....multiple copies to different people...whatever. The point is, i am using the same software and the same discs (Sony dvd+r), but when booted from the computer, they dont work. I did find that the discs can be formatted two ways, and I have been using the dvd-onetime burn only way, which produced the video, but not the sound.

Missed a couple of things. Using a USB connection to the computer. Second, I am using the same software for both...at least I think I am. When burning straight to disc, there is actually a setting on the camera to initiate the sequence, so i dont know for sure that it is the same. Maybe the camera has different software???

I have not tried PMB before. Maybe you can try Authoring DVD with Microsoft Windows Media Center for the video files that you have on your hard drive. That might give you an insight to what the software is doing to generate the discs.
Another thing you can do is post the disc content of the two different types of discs; you can use the "tree" command in the Command Prompt. That would allow us to say for sure whether one is a DVD disc, while the other is a data disc. Be careful though, as it will reveal sensitive information by outputting the file and directory names.
