DCR-TRv19 Audio Issues (Sibilance or similar)

Folks: I've got a DCR-TRV19 and am trying to move my older videos to DVD via my Mac. I've done this successfully for many videos; however, lately I've noticed that on playback, much of the audio is "clipped" or similar to sibilance. Almost as if the encoding to digital cuts out the higher frequencies. Could this be because of tape degredation or because my camcorder is on the last days of its life? I really don't want to hunt ebay for another used one to possibly find out it is the source tapes. I listened to a 2005 tape where it happens a lot and then a 2010 tape and it is MUCH less frequent but does happen on occasion. So I'm wondering if taps do degrade and this is the downside of having my material on digital tapes.

Also, is it possible to clean the heads and possibly get better performance/reduce audio issues?

Thx,

Mr T
