Hi Chieh,
I found your article about the Sony DCR TRV-350 camcorder at Some thoughts on the Sony DCR-TRV350 Digital8 Handycam.
I have one and just bought a Sony RDR-VX530 DVD/VHS recorder. I have many Hi8 tapes that I want to transfer to DVDs. With the 4-pin to 4-pin DV cable connected between the TRV-350 and the RDR-VX530 and the output of the VX530 connected to a TV I can see the video image on the TV and record to a DVD if I (1) set the TRV-350 to camera mode, (2) I play back a Digital 8 tape in the TRV-350, and (3) if I connect the output of another VCR to the S-video jack of the TRV-350 and set the menu option A/V --> DV out to "On" (although then the RDR-VX530 sets the TRV-350 to DV Camera Mode. However, if I play back a Hi8 tape in the TRV-350 I do not see any image on the TV and cannot record to DVD on the RDR-VX530. If I connect the TRV-350 to a PC with a "regular" firewire cable I can use Windows Moviemaker, for example, to capture the video from a Hi8 tape.
So far I have been on the phone with Sony tech support tier 1 and tier 2 twice for a total of 2.5 hours with no resolution. Two days ago they told me that there must be something wrong with the VX530 and that I should return it. I returned it and got another one with the same results. As I write this I am on hold to talk with Sony tier 2 tech support again about the TRV350. It seems to me that it may not be converting Hi8 tapes to DV when I use the 4-pin connector to connect to the VX530. It's hard to know or to get any good information from Sony because they don't have anyone that knows both products. I have to talk with one person about the VX530 and a different person about the TRV350.
Do you have any ideas about what's going on and how I can get the TRV350 to talk to the VX530 when using the DV cable and a Hi8 tape?
I even bought another DV 4-pin to 4-pin cable and I have tried two different Hi8 tapes with no success.
Thanks,
David Savage

Well, I connected my DCR-TRV350 to my Panasonic PV-GS50S digital camcorder with the 4-pin firewire cable. I was able to digital transfer my Video8 tapes to the Panasonic camcorder. As far as I know the Video8 should be equivalent to the Hi8 on the DCR-TRV350 camcorder. Unfortunately, I never had a Hi8 camcorder, so I don't have any tapes recorded in the Hi8 format.
But if you can capture Hi8 tapes through the Firewire cable on your computer, then there is nothing wrong with your DCR-TRV350. Maybe your RDR-VX530 isn't compatible with the DCR-TRV350.
