TRV 340 with error code 31:42

Smacked it on the tape door side (near the rear) twice. It worked, and I'm back in business
thanks to this site :-)

I had the infamous "C:31:42" error message (DCR TRV-730). Smacking the side of the camera didn't work, but removing the tape, closing the door, and then smacking the bottom did. By far my favorite technical tip!

Smacking worked for our 10 year old DCR TV-310 that has been giving us the C:31:42 error message. The camera has been in the closet for over a year, unused. I had to take out the tape, close it, smack the bottom and side at least ten times (my hands are still hurting) and loaded the tape again. It is now recording. Thanks!!!!

The smacking trick worked for my Sony TRV-110E! Had a C:31:42 error, and after smacking it gently on the bottom and the (tape) side 5 times each, it ran flawlessly again!

Im portuguese, i dont understand what did you mind with "Smacked"! What you press to smack?

My TVR7000, start the cassette for 3-4 seconds, and after that, give me the error...

Thanks

Unbelievable. September 12th 2014. I have a Sony DCR-TRV310 camcorder that I have been very happy with for many years, and use it weekly in my business. I am also an electronics technician, so when I read in this thread about smacking it in order to cure a trouble code of C:31:42 I was a bit skeptical, but thought that I would try a few lite smacks, especially since it had cured the problem for so many. I removed the cassette, smacked the bottom three times gently, put the cassette back in, and lo and behold, the code is gone and the camera again works perfectly. I wonder who figured this one out and how they did it. I also wonder what the smacking actually does inside the camera??? Ira.

Saludos

I have a Sony DCR-TRV730 that has been sitting on the shelve for maybe 10 years ! I too got the "C:31:42" error and tried the "smacking" procedure (with some misgivings). It worked great ! Thanks a lot for this forum...I must have saved $100 at least - if I'd decided to send it out rather than just abandon the project.

Wow! While reading the comments, I thought this wouldn't work, but it did! At first I smacked the bottom of the tape 10 times and still got the error. I did it again but this time, I smacked on all sides repeatedly, and yeah, it works! By the way my camcorder is a Sony DCR-TRV250 to put it on note.
