Lens cover not fully open error

On DCR-PC1000 NTSC lens cover won't open and whacking ain't fixing it, so I'd like to pull off front of thing and blow out or remove stupid lens cover and use manual cap (oh I know, some gadgisnob will solemnously exclaim "how darest she hillbilly attempt to disable this magnificent blather slobber snivel" because the camera will have a self-defeating thing to prevent operation if I do this or something, right? oh, the labyrinthine and diabolical self-destructs built into this thing . . . ) any technibrute out there willing to post encouraging picture of how and what? thanks . . . WE WILL NEVER BUY SONY AGAIN

I have the DCR-HC20 as well. The "cover is not open" message has been flashing on and off for a while, but I could still see the image on the screen. Today, its just black with the message even though the cover is open. I feel your frustration.

It seems they know this is a problem.

I have a HCR-SR1 and have a similiar problem. The damn thing has started to close the cover when it is turned on and open it as i power it off. In other words it probably is a software tag that is out of sync with the mechanical position. The message is however the same.

Does anyone know about a remedy (except for a hammer)?

I have a DCR-HC90 on which the automatic lens cover has a fault. I was a t Australia Zoo, just about to film the crocodile show and message came up 'lens cover not fully open'.
On returning to uk I sent my camera off to Savilles in York for estimate and repair. They fax me to inform me that the repair will cost £300.00 so I told them I would not go ahead yet but maybe at a later date. Went to pick camera up and had to pay £80.00 to collect due to the time incurred by the engineer. Rip off or what!!!
Iam still the owner of a camera which at the moment sometimes works and sometimes doesn't

I have the same problem where my DCR HC 20 now says "lens cover not open" when it is. Sony recently had to settle a class action suit for inferior quality on a lens on one of its high end digital cameras. If this is a extended problem for many consumers, maybe there is a class action for shoddy workmanship. Maybe Carl Zeiss needs another job other than designing and manufacturing lenses for camcorders.

My SONY camcorder does the same, almost 90% of the times. Frutrating ! ! ! Did not expect this kind of behavior from a SONY product. Anyway, contacted SONY support and they didn't even care abt the issue. They said to send it to SONY corporation and tey will take care of it. The rep did not where to send, how to send etc ... Mine was still under manufaturer warranty at that time. Very rude ... Seems that the reps did get the strict instructions from SONY management, not to take any calls reg the lens problem .... Donno what to do with this camcorder ... hate SONY for ths kind of attitude ....
