Okay, this problem lies with the rotary head. It may build up a gross greasy residue from the lubricants in the mechanism or my problem SOMEONE SPILLED MILK ON MY CAMERA!. All you need is windex/rubbing alcohol, (either works, they are both the same stuff; eythol/isoproapyl alcohol) two q-tips, and 1 spear tipped cotton swab. CVS has a marvelous package with multiple verity's I Suggest picking that up.
1.First open your tape dock, remove the tape
2. Dampen one of the Q-tips with windex/alcohol.
3. With the dampened side, spin the head MAKE SURE TO TOUCH SOME PART OF YOUR HAND TO THE METALLIC CHASSIS OF THE DECK! (this prevents static discharge/ demagnetism of the head )Do this until you spin the head for a few revolutions. Check the head with your finger by rubbing it, if it feels filmy repeat step 3.
4.The head is almost clean, with the "spear" clean the little ridges, DO NOT PUT IT IN THE SQUARES! Use the q-tip from step 3 to do that.
5. with the final DRY q-tip spin the head like step 3, just to dry it and remove traces of the offending residue. Make sure to tap it into the squares don't scrub.
6. Try to play a tape, if it plays back just like it did before you had this problem your done, go film just to celebrate!
If its sketchy, try again.
If this does not work after several tries, your rotary head is defective and its time to call Sony.
NOTE: THIS IS ONLY FOR THE TAPE SERIES!
INCLUDES: D8, Hi8, 8mm, VCR, MiniDv, and DV
