Sony DCR-DVD300 needs constant resetting---help please!

My Sony camcorder is doing something odd. After I turn it ON I get nothing unless I hit the rest button. Then I enter the date again and it is fine for shooting and finalizing , BUT if I stop shooting for even a few minutes, I have to start all over again with the rest funtion to continue shooting.

Can anyone trouble shoot this problem. IT is very annoying to not be able to pause while shooting or have to go through the whole reset routine again.
