Sony Handycam problem

I have a DCR-trv250 digital 8. I haven't used it for awhile and decided to re-capture to my computer some old videos that I had made with this cam.

I put it into VCR mode and played back the tape.... No Video, No sound, no numbers on the screen to indicate it even sees any recording. The tape is moving, will fast forward/rewind with no issues.

I fast forwarded to the end of the tape and tried recording on it.
Recording mode worked fine. It even plays back the new recording with no issues. Even new blank tapes record and play back with no issues.

I'm stuck... none of my older tapes will play in the VCR mode.

Anyone seen this issue before? If so... how do you fix this. I've tried everything to pulling the battery, reseting the unit, changing all the menu items.

Thanks

Ron

Are your old tapes made with a Video8 camcorder or Digital8 camcorder? Your DCR-TRV250 probably doesn't have Video8 play-back capability. At that time, I believe only the DCR-TRV350 had the Video8 play-back capability.

Video8 uses the old analog technology, while Digital8 uses the new DV technology.

Thanks for the info... The tapes I'm trying to view were made with the same camcorder. A year ago I was able to view them. Now nothing. I thought maybe they were exposed to some type of magnetic field, but even some tapes I brought from work will not play. I guess my only option at this point is to find another digital8 camcorder and try the tapes with it.

Just wondering, does anyone know that the typical life of a video tape would be? (if it is stored in a safe area)

Thanks,
